Creating and promoting events are a great way to lengthen and strengthen the visitor season by giving people a reason to travel to Scilly during the “shoulder” seasons and in particular to be able to offer a stronger “weekend” market.
We like to promote our season as operating from 1st April (or Easter weekend, whichever is the sooner) until 31st October – i.e. when the Scillonian III is sailing and when Skybus flights are still operating its summer schedule.
It is for this reason that Walk Scilly was created in 2007 and why we promote events into September (and increasingly October).
In 2014, Walk Scilly was almost a sell out with a total of 477 places sold on 24 walks (an average of 19.8 people per walk). A late Easter, good weather and advanced PR activities in the walking press and across Cornwall and UK media all contributed to what was widely hailed an outstanding success to kick start the season.
More recently, we have booked the stand-up comedian, Russell Kane, for a one-off gig and we have created a “lite” weekend version of Walk Scilly, this time over three days in September.
In addition to IP driven events, we support members’ events such as the Scilly Sea Swim, Scilly Folk Festival, Art Scilly, the World Pilot Gig Championships and the various Food & Drink festivals.
