The Islands’ Partnership, has today launched the Isles of Scilly Photography Competition for 2016. It follows immensely successful Photography Competitions in 2014 and 2015 which together attracted more than 1,500 entries. Both winning photos - “Puffin” by Steven Burbidge in 2014 and Megan Gallacher’s “Tropical Oasis” in 2015 - have become iconic marketing images for the Isles of Scilly alongside many of those shortlisted and voted for in the public vote which determines the overall winners.
The 2016 competition is once again open to all photographers living on, working on, or visiting the islands between 1st April and 30th September, who are keen to capture the essence of Scilly on camera and showcase their talents in Visit Isles of Scilly’s marketing materials. The outright winner will win a three-night break for two on a Bed & Breakfast basis plus an evening’s dinner for two at Tregarthen’s Hotel on St. Mary’s, together with two return tickets on the Scillonian III passenger ferry courtesy of Isles of Scilly Travel.
This year, there are eight categories. They are: Seascapes and landscapes, Inhabitants of Scilly, Our heritage and culture, Foodie fun, Scilly pastimes, Scilly events, Family time, and Scilly selfies.
Following the closure of the competition on 30th September, a short list of the best entries from each category will be selected by representatives of the Islands’ Partnership. These entries will then be displayed online via visitislesofscilly.com, and the general public invited to vote for their favourite images. The winner will be notified by email in November 2016.
“Our annual Photography Competition has become a welcome addition to our seasonal calendar and this year, we have extended the period for entries by an extra month, due to requests from visitors in previous years,” says David Jackson, Executive Director, Islands’ Partnership. “The standard of entries has been immensely high in the past and we are grateful to have had so much choice to feature in this year’s Visit Isles of Scilly Guide, our Visit Isles of Scilly website and various promotional materials throughout the year. We look forward to receiving many more entries this year, inspired by the new categories. Finally,” he adds, “I would like to thank Tregarthen’s Hotel and Isles of Scilly Travel for their kind and generous donations for the winner’s prize.”
