A self-employed joiner from Prestwich, Manchester has won the 2016 Isles of Scilly Photography Competition following an online public vote on VisitIslesOfScilly.com. Carl Farran won with his photograph entitled “Sky, Sea, Sand” after it received more than 1,200 votes. Carl wins a short break for two at Tregarthen’s Hotel on St. Mary’s (with dinner on one evening) and two return boat tickets on the Scillonian III.
Carl, who has visited Scilly several times, is a keen amateur photographer and always keeps his camera close to hand. “It was whilst island-hopping to Tresco this summer that I noticed the wonderful sky, sea and sand photo opportunity, so I took a few shots, never thinking I would win a photography competition with one of them!” he says. “I am very pleased but also surprised,” he says.
This year’s photography competition, which is run annually by the Islands’ Partnership, saw more than 1,000 entries, a record since the competition started back in 2014. “We’re always delighted that the competition, now in its third year, creates a lot of excitement and enthusiasm from our visitors,” says David Jackson, Executive Director, Islands’ Partnership. “Importantly, from the IP’s perspective, this competition really helps to augment Visit Isles of Scilly’s existing photographic library, with many featuring in our marketing materials. Carl’s photo, alongside a number of this year’s finalists will also feature in the forthcoming 2017 Isles of Scilly Guide.”
The Islands’ Partnership would like to thank Isles of Scilly Travel and Tregarthen’s Hotel for their support with the competition.
